Description

The kaban occupies a special place in Somalian music. Arriving in the 1940s, it became the mainstay of the immensely popular style of music known as qaraami — poetic lyrics set to sparse kaban and bongos accompaniment. Mohamed M. Kooshin was a rare master of the instrument, in the lineage of legendary players such as Qarshe, Hudeydi, and Omar Dhuule. He was the youngest member of the esteemed national music group Waaberi, before leaving Somalia for Toronto in the early 1990s, where he recorded a string of releases at his home studio, till his death in 2018.
